Economic Viability

The Lignite Vision 21 Program has established aggressive economic targets because the power plant and the electricity it produces must be competitive in today's market, particularly in light of oncoming industry de-regulation.  These economic targets are:

  • Plant cost: $1,300 / kW (Current Standard Plant)

  • Operation and Maintenance: 2-3 mills / kWh (0.2 - 0.3 cents / kWh)

  • Fuel Cost: 60 cents / million Btu

  • Transmission Costs: 3-5 mills / kWh (0.3 - 0.5 cents / kWh)

The total cost range for the above economic target falls in the 32-38 mills per kWh range, which is what the plant must attain to compete in today's market.

Ultimately, the Lignite Vision 21 Program has to demonstrate the highest standards of generation technology, transmission and environmental controls while meeting or exceeding the economic targets listed above.
